26 - Pretty Much Mid Season Already

Episode 26 focuses on the "Mid-Season Finale" of season 2 of AMC's The Walking Dead. This longer-than-average conversation features KMO, Olga and Marty covering the entire episode but focusing heavily on the conclusion. Suffice it to say that, if you have not watched this amazing episode, do NOT listen to the podcast until after you've seen it. This episode shook some of us up and reinvigorated our enthusiasm for the rest of season two which will be resuming in February of 2012. Please listen to the show and let us know what you think by emailing us at zrealmcast@yahoo.com or by posting a message on our Facebook page.

  1. You do realize this picture in itself is a spoiler right?

  2. Good point, Anonymous, I will swap it out with a less spoilery one.

  3. Yeah, that was quite an episode. I, too, was in tears at the end. Just lost it.

The scene between Dale and Shane was also exceptional. I was surprised to what extent Dale knew (or suspected) the exact circumstances of Otis's death. It's been shown before that Dale's good at reading people, but was there more foreshadowing in previous episodes that Dale didn't believe Shane's story?

Also interesting was Dale's decision to confront Shane with his suspicions instead of keeping quiet. And Dale's decision to not shoot Shane after revealing those suspicions. (Also, I guess it's kind of surprising Shane didn't shoot Dale after that.)

  4. It is nice to hear from someone else who was emotionally affected by the finale.
There had been several moments, as I recall, where Dale had given a "suspicious glance" to Shane. Shane's reactions upon his return and the way he shaved his head was all very questionable to Dale. You are right that Dale is a good judge of character and he can clearly see that Shane is a shady dude.
I was really thinking they were going to have Shane get shot by Dale to keep some portion of the comic storyline but to give it a new spin. It would have been interesting to have Dale have to deal with that internally and either tell the truth to the group or to find himself living a lie and being like Shane. This would be anathema to him for sure.
    Come on february!

  5. KMO: It's fascinating that Shane is such a driver of the plot at a time when, in the comics, he's not only "dead" but Rick has put down zombie Shane as well. In the comic, Carl shoots Shane to save Rick. I'm hoping they preserve that in the tv show, but it could be effective to have Dale do that deed. I just hope that they don't decide that Shane is an undependable character and keep him around for the duration of the seires.

  6. Huh. I meant "unexpendable" rather than "undependable," but some none-too-clever bot seems to have "corrected" my spelling.

  7. Also, on the topic of zombie media suggestions, how about the "Newsflesh" series by Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire). Two books of the trilogy ("Feed" and "Deadline") are out, a third ("Blackout") is on the way. It's a tale of intrepid journalists in a world after the zombie apocalypse. This is a little different from the usual post-apocalyptic story in that humanity has beaten back the zombies and survived, but the living dead remain an omnipresent threat. (It's the kind of zombie apocalypse where anyone who dies will become a zombie, not just the zombie bite victims.) It's pretty good, her version of the zombie meme is full of creepy details, it's also unusual to have a story where zombies are part of a society's status quo.

  8. I love the cover art for Feed:

Kinda spendy, but I'm considering the Kindle version. Given that I just bought the collected works of Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft for the Kindle for a grand total of $2.99, it's kinda hard for me to justify $8 spent on yet another novel when I have so many half read books within arm's reach.

  9. There's an episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Season two - episode 7 s02e07) in which Anikan and Obi Wan demonstrate why it's good to have a light saber in the event of a zombie attack. Even headshots don't take out Geonosian zombies.

  10. Wow!! Thanks for the Mira Grant news. I enjoyed her musings about her process and inspiration.
